Calculate your Online Identity Score

Before running the calculator:

  • Open a browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, etc.)
  • Go to Google (www.google.com)
  • Type your name in the search box using quotation marks.
    For example, "John Smith".

You are now ready to begin. Please answer the following 5 questions:

1. What's the total number of responses Google returned?

(You will find this number in the upper right hand part of the Google results page. Don't include any punctuation, e.g., comma, period, etc.)

2. What's the total number of responses on the first three pages of results?

(This number is typically 30 unless you have changed your default Google settings)

3. Now go back to those first three pages of your Google results and manually total up the responses that are NOT about you. (They are about someone else with your name.) Enter the total for pages 1, 2, and 3.

4. Look more closely at your results, think about what you want to be known for, and check the box next to the option that best describes your results:
No relevance - The results that are about me have no relation to how I want to be known.

Little relevance - A few of the results that are about me communicate how I want to be known.

Some relevance - About half of the entries that are about me express my area of expertise, and there are many references to my website, blog, or online profiles.

High relevance - About three-quarters of the entries that are about me clearly express my personal brand (how I want to be known).

Complete relevance - Almost all of the results that are about me are very consistent with my area of expertise and how I want to be known.

5. Select from the options below the statement that best describes the career level for which you are aiming (This is aspirational, meaning you want to evaluate your online profile as it relates to the next level in your career.):
University/College student or Recent Graduate
Entry-level (1-5 years' experience) or Individual Contributor
Manager with 5-10 years' experience, Director, Consultant or Small Business Owner
VP, Highly-regarded Consultant or Acknowledged Thought Leader
C-level Executive, Partner, Board Member, Celebrity, Renowned Consultant or Expert
